BIO 345: Evolution

Presents the mechanisms and patterns of organic evolution. Topics include population genetics, natural selection, genetic drift, gene flow, mutation, speciation mechanisms, phylogenetics, molecular evolution, adaptation, coevolution, and the fossil record.

• Population genetics and evolutionary forces: selection coefficients, heterozygote advantage, genetic drift in small populations, and gene flow in BIO 345
• Phylogenetics and macroevolutionary patterns: cladistics, maximum parsimony, molecular clocks, homologous vs. homoplastic traits at ASU
• Speciation mechanisms and reproductive isolation: prezygotic vs. postzygotic barriers, reinforcement, hybrid zones, and adaptive radiation
• Molecular evolution and evolutionary developmental biology (Evo-Devo): neutral theory of molecular evolution, gene duplications, and Hox gene regulation for BIO 345
