WRIT 150: Writing and Critical Reasoning–Thematic Approaches

USC's cornerstone undergraduate writing course taken by nearly all entering lower-division students. Structured in an intensive workshop seminar format, the course engages students in academic writing, rhetorical analysis, and critical reasoning focused on specific thematic tracks (such as Technology and Social Change, Globalization, Ethics and Social Responsibility, Aesthetics, or Environmental Values). Students learn to construct persuasive, evidence-based academic arguments, evaluate complex scholarly texts, refine thesis statements, synthesize multidisciplinary literature, and master stylistic fluency and grammatical precision through iterative drafting, peer review, and individual instructor consultations.
